A unique spin on the popular handheld fidget spinner—it’s wearable!
As an occupational therapist working in a public school district for 18 years, my primary role was supporting students' success in the classroom. One of the many ways that I supported students’ success was to determine individual “Tools for Learning.” Tools for learning can include recommendations for classroom-specific accommodations, strategies or activities. Providing a student with a fidget is an example of an often-used tool. Over the years, I have seen that giving the right fidget to a student can positively influence success and participation in the classroom.
Mindful Fidgets®—officially patented in 2024—began with the fidget spinner explosion in 2017. Fidget spinners made their way into the hands of millions of students and adults. However, due to the size and nature of these popular large handheld fidgets, they quickly became a distraction and were no longer welcomed in many classrooms.
With my background in occupational therapy and experience working in a school district, I began to adapt the popular fidget to meet my specifications of an effective fidget, namely being Mindful of those nearby. How? By respecting the sensory space and environment of others. A good fidget can and should be used without distracting peers or coworkers, so I made it smaller for a more discreet presence. I also added “tactile bumps” to the device edges for sensory input. But most importantly, I took it one step further and gave it a truly unique spin—WEARABLE!
